Happy workers are productive workers. But how do you motivate your employees to work hard to further grow your business? The key is to realize that different things motivate different people. Often, managers forget that what motivates them, isn’t necessarily the same for all their employees. Once you have established what motivates who, you will have a world of opportunity at your fingertips.
You may be asking, “Steve how do I find out what motivates my team?” In today’s episode of A Drink With “The Hurricane” I will teach you a great exercise you can do with your staff, called CLAMS. Using the CLAMS method will enable you target the key motivator for each and every one of your employees.
CLAMS stands for:
- Challenge
- Location
- Advancement
- Money
- Security
As said, what might motivate you might be different than what motivates your staff. With that being said, I urge you to find out which one of these 5 contenders motivates each one of your staff. Keep in mind the motivator or “carrot you dangle” may be completely different from employee to employee.
In my business, I have used the CLAMS strategy and noticed each one of my staff’s motivation was different depending on the person. For example, Nicole’s motivator was time off, I constructed a layout where she would be able to get more time off if she completed a certain goal. Tony however, his motivation was money. So what I did was implement a commission structure for him. Every time he makes a sale he is able to get a percentage of that money to keep for himself.
Advancement, is a key motivator for some. So it’s important to keep this in mind. You can teach them different aspects of the business to advance their career for the future. By showing them how the business works, you allow them to expand their knowledge for future growth within your business. The key here is to come up with a goal for this employee to accomplish. For example, if Sally makes adds 2,000 hours per month, you as a business owner can reward her by hiring someone underneath her. This allows Sally the opportunity to become a manager if she completes the goal you set for them.
